Subject: Prescription Benefits

As communicated earlier in the academic year, as of January 1, 2010, the state replaced CVS/Caremark with Medco Health Solutions as the administrator of the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) prescription drug benefits program. All benefit-eligible employees should have received a Welcome Packet from MEDCO that included a new prescription drug card as well as information regarding the pharmacy program.

University Human Resources has been made aware that some employees have yet to receive their new prescription drug identification card. Please be assured that even if you have not received your prescription drug identification card, you and your eligible dependents do have prescription coverage.

Ordering a Prescription Card

To receive a card, employees should call MEDCO Members Services at 1-866-220-6512. An automated operator will ask you to provide your SHBP insurance number (i.e., the number that appears on your health benefits card). If you do not have your SHBP number available, you may use your social security number. If the number is accepted, you will be provided with your identification and group numbers, and prompted to order a prescription card, which will be mailed to your home. If the number is not accepted, a live operator will speak to you and ask for your SHBP insurance number, date of birth, and home address. The operator will then provide you with your identification and group numbers.

Immediate Need to Fill Prescriptions

If you have an immediate need to fill a prescription, you should provide the MEDCO Pharmacy Health Services Desk telephone number (1-800-922-1557) to your pharmacy. The pharmacy will call MEDCO for verification of coverage. If you have your identification and group numbers, you should provide them to the pharmacy.

Coverage Review

Medco has a listing of preferred medications that Members are requested to utilize. However, if your doctor indicates that you may not utilize the preferred medications, you or your doctor may request a review for coverage approval. Your doctor may call 1-800-417-1764 to request approval to use the non-preferred medication. If the medication is approved, the member will be required to pay the appropriate co-payment for the medication, which in some cases may cost more than the preferred alternatives. Prior approval is only required for members who receive a prescription on the Coverage Review listing for the first time. If you do not obtain approval from Medco for the medication, you will be responsible for the entire cost of the prescription. For a listing of the Preferred Medications, visit our website.
